Power Draw Calculations for 0.05+ Units

Utility bills and vendor spec sheets rarely agree. Suite operators need wall-meter measurements at operating temperature to forecast costs and verify electrical capacity before expansion.

Measurement Method

We use calibrated clamp meters at the PDU input, not at the building main. Measurements run for at least 60 minutes after units reach thermal steady state. Startup inrush is logged separately but excluded from efficiency calculations.

Typical findings on 0.05–0.10 rated ASIC units:

  • Wall draw 3–8% above nameplate at 26°C intake
  • Wall draw 10–15% above nameplate at 32°C intake
  • PSU efficiency drops measurably on units older than 18 months of continuous operation

Hash per Kilowatt-Hour

Efficiency is the number that drives procurement decisions at scale. We calculate delivered hash divided by wall kilowatts at each temperature step. A unit with higher nameplate throughput but worse efficiency loses advantage when your utility rate is high or your panel capacity is fixed.

Aggregate Suite Load

Multiply per-unit wall draw by active unit count, add 10% for networking, monitoring, and lighting, then compare to panel rating. Operators who skip this step often discover capacity limits only when a new batch arrives on the loading dock.
