Selecting ASIC vs GPU for Dedicated Suites
Throughput, power density, and maintenance trade-offs when choosing equipment for a new dedicated mining suite.
The ASIC versus GPU question comes up on every procurement advisory call. Both can exceed 0.05 computing power thresholds in aggregate, but they impose different constraints on suite design.
ASIC Rows
ASIC units deliver higher hash per square metre. They are purpose-built, firmware-locked, and relatively simple to bench test. Downsides: single-algorithm focus, louder operation, and less flexibility if you pivot algorithms. Electrical and cooling infrastructure must match the specific unit draw profile.
Best for: operators with stable long-term algorithm commitment and warehouse-scale floor area.
GPU Racks
GPU density racks offer algorithm flexibility and a secondary resale market for cards. They draw less per slot but require more rack space and more complex airflow management. Thermal paste and fan maintenance cycles are shorter. Power draw varies with workload profile more than ASIC units.
Best for: operators who value hardware liquidity and multi-algorithm capability over maximum hash per square metre.
Hybrid Suites
Some Gyeongsang suites run ASIC rows for baseline throughput and a GPU section for experimental workloads. This doubles the maintenance skill set and complicates cooling zoning. We recommend hybrid layouts only when electrical capacity is segmented between rows.
